The Big C

Consider this a friendly public service announcement: smoking may cause lung cancer!

My FIL smoked three packs a day for many years and was diagnosed with lung cancer at the end of July. The doctor also found cancerous lesions on his vocal cords. While I know that non-smokers do get lung cancer as well, there is no doubt in my mind that his heavy smoking contributed to his.

At 87 years old, he is too old for surgery. He is also too old for chemotherapy, which leaves radiation as the only treatment option.

After numerous tests, his first session is this afternoon. He called around lunch from the hospital (he was admitted on Thursday for observation because his heart was beating crazy-fast) to relay that he would have 16 sessions, spaced two days apart.

I hope this is an uneventful adventure.
